Bulgaria, July 2022, Day Five: Meadow Lizard

It was back to Varna this morning to drop Dylan off for the early train. After breakfast Anton and I then went to Golden Beach National Park to look for Meadow Lizards and we literally found them under the first log by the car park.

On the way back to Kamen Bryag we stopped off at Balchik Raptor viewing point for a bit of herping. Not much apart from a Spur-thighed Tortoise and a few birds here, a dark phase Booted Eagle was the highlight.

A quick look around Kamen Bryag revealed an interesting passage of Sand Martins with 100+ birds moving south (autumn migration is starting!) and in the evening we did some spotlighting around the Cape Kaliakra steppe (just a couple of Nightjars) and then set up a moth trap at the Kamen Bryag steppe.

Meadow Lizard
Calandra Lark
Juvenile Pied Wheatear. A plumage to add to this blog post here. Interestingly also had one of the mystery wheatears in Kamen Bryag, the first time I've seen them away from the Cape.
Little Owl
Sand Martins on the move
Seems like the wheat harvest is a bit earlier in Bulgaria
