4. Songs of Praise: I wish

Previously: CLICK HERE

As he got older he wanted to become an explorer to look for undiscovered wildlife so he set off on a discovery journey. Although he found the world to be full of many unknown strange and wonderful things, they all seemed to be in some sort of danger. He didn't know what to say or what to do about it. He wished for something more- he wished he could do something.

3. Songs of Praise: Daddy Long Legs

Previously on Songs of Praise CLICK HERE

To get away from his family he would escape to his room to be on his own, but he was not always alone........

This song is about an early encounter with nature. For some people (myself) being sensitive to nature did not necessarily come naturally as a child. Some people never seem to  'grow up' and do not fully appreciate how important caring for nature is for our own well being. This song asks the question 'why'?

2.
So outdoors was great but there was grief out there. Perhaps it was better indoors?
That was grief too! Relatives would come round to talk and ask him strange questions. They would fret and fuss and bother and talk some more.
There was Uncle Tom, Grandad Bootsie and Freda and Lorraine who just not stop talking. But worst of all was Auntie Llama.
She had a very strange indigestion problem.

This is a song about family life in a working class home where health problems are part of everyday life. In order to cope with the horror of vomiting old people on a daily basis, we as kids used to imagine we were living with Llamas that used to spit everywhere. Instead of spitting out horrible things all over the house we used to imagine they would spit out cute baby Llamas everywhere they went. Everyone coped well that way.

Songs of Praise, Mini-Episode One, The Black Dog

Here is the first instalment of Songs of Praise, a 'family musical' story that I've knocked up about the adventures of a young naturalist.

It is the dark ages in 20th century London and a boy named Bryan is born. One day, when Bryan was three, he went to the park. He loved the park. He would chase butterflies and feed the birds and hunt for insects.
He was happily playing with his friends one day when suddenly, he saw a sight. It was a sight so scary that his blood set thick.
It was the Black Dog.

This is a song about a lesson learnt from an early experience with nature: Peace is in constant conflict with fear. Often that fear is irrational. It is also often self fulfilling (e.g. dogs tend to go for people who fear them).  Once self-fulfilled the consequences are often not as bad as perceived but sometimes e.g. the dog kills and eats you. In this case the central character survives and goes on to live the rest of his life in constant conflict, hopelessly longing for peace and being whipped along life's road by his fears, to bigger and better things.
