Weekend in Oxfordshire

A bit of crammed weekend as off to Uganda tonight in search of Shoebill and Gorillas but managed to get the heath trap out last night at the Old Vic, completed the Otmoor butterfly transect, planted out some Pumpkins with Jacob and helped out at Sunfest where Holly was hosting an art stall.

Another Privet Hawkmoth at the Old Vic
Scarlet Tiger in the trap- the first one I've had round here at light
Four-dotted Footman- I think a first for the Old Vic
Holly's card stand at Sunfest- I think I ended up spending more on cheeseburgers and drinks in the 32 degrees than she made in sales. Here's Holly's online shop HERE

I’m confused. Your active stance on environmental issues is exemplary but reading your blog you appear to go on numerous foreign birding/wildlife holidays to such far flung places as Morocco, Azores, Majorca, Bulgaria etc and now Uganda. If you are walking, cycling or swimming to these destinations I commend you, but if not how can you justify the air travel involved. Perhaps being part of Extinction Rebellion offers some exemption to allow for these double standards.

Hi Jeremy,
it could be double standards but I think that is impossible to avoid as current global systems are unsustainable and the major objective of XR is to put pressure on government to develop sustainable systems. In the meantime it is still important to support ecotourism (e.g. on our current trip to Uganda the permits to see gorillas is 800 dollars per person which goes into their conservation and our single group is bringing a total of 40,000 dollars into the Uganda ecotoursim industry on this one trip- an industry that supports the national park network and the community employed in the national park network). Yes indeed it would be best if we travelled here on an intra-African high speed rail network or electric plane but they dont exist and the development of sustainable global travel is something that has to be government led. Also the company I'm travelling with Wise Birding (a company I also partner with for Azores work) donate an additional percentage to conservation and since the declaration of the climate emergency (the last few months) have also set up a range of non flying tours using rail network to get to Spain and Italy and the whole ecotourism industry will hopefully develop in that direction more as the technology becomes available.
