Azores Wildlife 2021 Review

Might as well start doing these. Quick round ups on what we've achieved this year on the various projects. First up Azores Wildlife. Mainly desktop this year from our end. Some kind of normality resumed in 2021 but the Pelagic and Safari trips were held off again. The guys had another great season on Corvo. Here's a quick photo summary.

Corvo 2021: 74 vagrants of 38 species were recorded with highlight being this stunning male Prothonotary Warbler. More on the Corvo blog HERE
The split of Common Gull and Short-billed Gull resulted in a major retrospective arm chair discovery for our project with another first for the Western Palearctic discovered. Original paper HERE
Our original article on the discovery of Corvo in 2005 was re-released on Birdguides HERE. Another major WP discovery? (above)- one that got away?, a possible Cabot's Tern in 2005.  All our publications on this project HERE

The Birdlife Partner SPEA and Portuguese Rarity Committee (we are voting members) published another excellent report HERE

Our next local report is coming soon and we are also working on the 2019 and 2020 reports ready for a joint release early next year (fingers crossed). We should also be publishing the official Azores bird list soon.

More work on the website (this really is a lot of work!), still a work in progress but getting there HERE. Originally we thought of writing a book on the natural history of the Azores but decided that websites interlinked into social media platforms have much further reach and readers, plus we can constantly update.
