This close juvenile Peregrine was some compensation for missing a Honey Buzzard and Marsh Harrier this morning. I did see 4 Common Buzzards, 2 Sparrowhawks and three Kestrels were performing too
Juvenile Kestrel, the fresh plumage and squared off black tail tip indicate a juvenile. Other ageing features include (not all shown here); the streaked breast (spotted in adult females) and the pale tips to the primary coverts and remiges. The greyish tones to the uppertail coverts and rectrices could suggest a juvenile male as does the unequal rufous/dark barring on the greater coverts. Juvenile females tend to show uniform upperparts and tail and equally wide dark and rufous bars on the coverts.
Swallow- one of over 400 today moving south- a spectacle which is surprisingly difficult to photograph. Also 9 Siskin over, 1 Meadow Pipit, 20+ Sand Martin, 1 House Martin and 1 Swift.
Cormorants were on the move today with a flock of 8+1 and 4 on the lake.
Over 250 Coot today- where did they come from??- my last count a few days ago was 40!
Ringers (Mike and Frankie)- they caught the Kestrel this morning and a few other migrants
