Xmas bits and bobs

Not just been Packham bashing this xmas. Managed to get out a few times - today did the morning at Otmoor, Ebird list HERE and managed to take the family on a walk round Oare Marshes a couple of days ago and also got a little bit of time in at Beddington. Not too bad considering we all got struck down by this winter cold going round too. Had 8 Golden Plover from the obs window yesterday. Here's a few pictures. Off to Fuerteventura on Wednesday so hopefully should have some more exciting stuff to report back on soon- winter can be a bit of a slog so always a good idea to have a winter trip or two (will also be in Ghana in early Feb). 

 Hybrid Barnacle Geese with Barnacle Goose this morning at Otmoor (presumably Canada x Barnacle?)  This is actually a Greylag x Barnacle Goose hybrid situation see HERE

 The spectacle of thousands of Lapwing and Golden Plover at Otmoor is always mesmerising (above and below)

 Reed Bunting at Otmoor- interesting bird with quite a bit of grey in mantle and scaps and long rustic bunt like streaks on flanks. First-winter males are supposed to have more grey in plumage.

 Caspian-type Gull at Beddington - with so few gulls at the farm now due to the landfill closing it will be interesting to see what impact it has on our local winter birding

Just when you think that Packham might actually be of some use to nature conservation then this happens!

They gave him a CBE. Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Isn't this proof that he is no threat to the nature destroying establishment and by accepting the honour is actually part of it?

I've never heard Packham once speak out agaisnt the main cause of ecological devastation which is the inequality of power in the UK, the inability for a nature loving majority to express their will over minority rule. Has he ever mentioned the need for constitutional reform, the need for the conservation establishment to overthrow government departments and become the conservation government and to impose a conservation manifesto into law by force.

Instead he focuses on popular support and building his own profile and getting medals by whipping up the crowd with emotive subjects such as hunting, leading them into a war on symptoms rather than a war on fundamental values, power and policy.

Liberty is much more than just saying what people don't want to hear it is imposing will to create a world that expresses the will of the majority. They shouldn't be giving him an honour, they should be trying to assassinate him.

My family and other filthy animals

I got so moved by xmas spirit this year that I even wrote a poem about my family.

My Family and Other Filthy Animals 

They say in these days family's been replaced with friends,

Our co-workers now, our brothers, sisters and mum,

Blood bonds replaced with customers and colleagues,

Our walk through life with the people from college.

But will this doth do when the oil doth run out,

And everything's been eaten even the pet mouse.

When the purge is administered from those up on high, 

Those Billionaires, those masters, those one percentiles.

For those who have followed the orders of them,

Will now find themselves in a predicament.

For the masters will ensure their blood line will not die out,

Their children their treasures, their legacy and life.

From hence their orders will follow a theme,

For those who have abandoned all family for friends.

The Masters will no longer say' Devote your life to this brand, your promotion, the dividends and our shareholder plan',

They will no longer say ' Kill the birds and the bees and destroy all of nature to feed my incessant greed'.

The Masters will now say' Now please lay down your life'

So that my children and family survive

So next time we think our family are twats,

Remember this ditty about a brain hack.

Our family may be annoying, our sister a bitch,

our brother a dickhead, our dad a prick, 

Our mother a nutter, our uncle a pig.

Our aunty a swine, our cousin a brat

But we should never forget....

They are the best chance we have

JANUARY :WINTER IN THE TROPICS - GHANA 

No better way than breaking up the Northern winter than with a trip to the tropics. Planning on setting up a small winter project in Ghana so in 2018 we did a recce to find a project area.

FEBRUARY- MARCH: THE BEAST FROM THE EAST

The infamous Beast from the East 2018 produced some excellent local birding.

Ice age at Beddington Farmlands 

Lapwing at Beddington- large numbers were displaced in the cold weather

Golden Plover- good numbers were also recorded with birds also on the deck, feeding amongst the excavators that were keeping unfrozen ground exposed 

Knot- one of the highlights of the hard weather movement

The Beddington campaign rumbled along through 2018 with highlights including the May local councillor election where I stood as a Green Party candidate to highlight Beddington Farmlands and also the September Chris Packham People's March where we marched for a end to conservation organisation corruption at Beddington Farmlands.

MAY: HERPING IN BULGARIA

Had an absolutely fantastic trip in May with Dylan and Anton herping in Bulgaria. We had 20 species of reptiles and amphibians in three days.

JUNE: EUROPEAN ROAD TRIP- SLOVENIA, CROATIA AND AUSTRIA IN SUMMER 

Absolutely incredible trip in the camper with the gang. The focus was on getting Rock Partridge for the WP list and then making a start on learning WP butterflies and moths. Guided in Slovenia by Domen BLOG HERE.

JUNE: SPOTTED FLYCATCHERS AT THE OLD VICARAGE

Great to see the Spot Flys breeding again at Holly's.

SUMMER: CONSERVATION WORK

JULY-AUGUST: THE LONG HOT INSECT SUMMER

Summer 2018 was long and dry and hot. Great for insects. Loads of new moths at the Beddington obs and an incredible influx of Southern Migrant Hawkers into the South.

Bulrush Veneer-at Beddington Farmlands. A local scarcity. There was a lot of displacement of insects through the summer particularly wetland species which were presumably moving around as their habitats dried up. 

Nephopterix angustella- one of many firsts for Beddington Farmlands through the period 

Gold Spot - a second for the farmlands 

Juniper Webber- a first for Beddington 

Presumably forced out by the dry conditions there were 12-15 Hedgehogs in the local area by late summer 

Had a couple of great days out with Steve Gale BLOG HERE out on the North Downs looking at botany and butterflies. This Small Teasle was one of the highlights.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER: AZORES PELAGIC 2018

SUMMARY HERE

Yet another great success on the Azores pelagic. This year led by David Monticelli with three separate Swinhoe's Petrel sightings and lots more: SEE HERE .

AUGUST TO OCTOBER: AUTUMN RARITIES

The Richard's Pipit at Beddington was the local highlight of the autumn. The first since 1970 

Roger found some great local birds including Black Tern (above) and recording breaking numbers of Spoonbill (below) 

Despite several trips to Kent, didn't manage to find much although did see the usual Bonaparte's at Oare, Red-necked Phal there and some general great Thames Estuary birding 

'Bird ' of the autumn locally was this Beluga Whale in the Thames estuary. 

The great mothing season continued into the autumn with this Dusky Lemon Sallow in October- a first for the farmlands

NOVEMBER : BULGARIA RECCE NOVEMBER 2018

Started an exciting new project in November with the plan to buy some land and set up a small nature reserve/observatory on the Black Sea in Bulgaria. Early days yet but the recce went really well.
